Thistleworth Tennis – Tennis Coaching Classes 2020

This document has been produced as a guide for players and parents to providing an insight into the structure of the tennis-coaching programme at Thistleworth Tennis Club. It gives a basic appreciation of lesson content and progress routes for players.

Tennis Coaching lessons are available on Saturday mornings (juniors) and Sunday mornings (adults).

Thistleworth Tennis Club is in the privileged position of having 4 LTA qualified coaches to deliver the 2020 coaching programme. All coaches are very enthusiastic about the programme and are keen to ensure all players have an enjoyable tennis experience.

Coaching Sessions

Mini Tennis is an LTA initiative to provide young players with a fun and exciting experience when starting to play tennis. It is the best way for children to develop their tennis skills. Research has shown that it is essential for children up to the age of 10 years to learn the physical skills of running, jumping, balance, co-ordination, throwing and catching as well as basic tennis skills if they are to reach their full sporting potential. Expect to see lots of these activities in Mini Tennis lessons at Thistleworth.

There are 3 progressive stages of Mini Tennis – Red, Orange and Green. Each stage has specifically designed rackets and balls to suit the size and ability of the child. Young players simply can't cope with adult rackets and balls. The length of the Mini Tennis rackets and the low compression of the Mini Tennis balls allow young players to get maximum enjoyment out of the game. Appropriate rackets and balls will be available at each lesson, however parents are encouraged to buy the correct racket to enable play outside of the coaching lessons.

Mini Tennis – Red sessions (suggested age range 4– 8yrs)

Sessions –Saturday at 9.00am (1-hour per session)

Mini Tennis Red is the first stage of Mini Tennis and is very important for building skills and confidence. The emphasis is on fundamental sporting skills such as movement, balance and co-ordination and above all else fun!

As children progress through Mini Tennis Red they will be introduced to basic technical skills, reception skills, rallying and eye ball coordination development.

Mini Tennis – Orange/Green sessions (suggested age range 7 - 12yrs)

Sessions – Saturday at 10am (1-hour per session)

Mini Tennis Orange introduces children to playing on a 3/4-length tennis court. The low bounce Mini Tennis Orange ball slows the game down to a speed that gives players time to play good basic tennis shots and enables them to have maximum fun playing the game!

The emphasis continues to be on developing fundamental sporting skills as well as hitting shots just like their favourite stars.

Mini Tennis Green is the final stage before children move to conventional tennis. Played on a full size tennis court, the Mini Tennis Green ball is slightly lower bouncing than a normal tennis ball and helps the children to use good technique and rally consistently.

Physical skills continue to be an important part of lessons but there may be more emphasis on children playing competitions progressing towards full tennis scoring

Junior Improver Development sessions (suggested age range 10 – 16yrs)

Sessions – Saturday at 12am (1 hour session)

This development class will provide a progression for players graduating from Mini Tennis and new/infrequent players. The lessons will focus on basic strokes, skills and fitness aspects required to compete. Once players can demonstrate a grasp of the basic strokes and requirements of match play they will then progress to the Advanced Development session. All players will be actively encouraged to play social tennis between the lessons to practice and cement the technical skills learnt in the lessons.

Junior Advanced Development sessions (suggested age range 10 – 18yrs)

Sessions – Saturday at 12am (1 hour session)

This advanced class is for the better players who have been having coaching for a few years. In this class they will learn how to compete with a view to joining the club teams and regular play at Senior club sessions. Additionally, players are encouraged to gain an LTA rating and compete in external tournaments.

Adult session (for players 16yrs and above)

Session – Sunday at 11.30am (1.5-hour session)

This class is for adult players who are new to the game or have limited experience of tennis. The class will provide players with the basic strokes and movement to gain enjoyment from social tennis in a club environment. The lessons will consist of a mixture of tennis and building the necessary underlying skills. Lessons will be targeted at the overall group and progress at a pace suitable for each player.
